The lovers quickly discover their auras offer each other something they cannot get enough of: For Nia, it's the comfort of the demigod's calming warmth; for Calipher, it's the free will of Nia's humanity. It's a feeling either would stop at nothing to hold onto.
Even defy direct orders from the gods themselves.
But as the star-crossed lovers continue to pursue their love and ignore all else, the middle realm of Terath slips into chaos. The land is wrought by drought, then floods, and is rocked by torrential storms. Demigods and men alike grow edgy. The gods intervene to force things back to order.
This includes forcing Calipher back to the realm of the gods. Before he leaves, he steals magic from the gods to enchant Nia's parting gift.
But Nia soon finds that breaking the rules of magic and the gods comes with a terrible cost.
